The American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA) returns for the Southeastern Regional Competition of its prestigious Giles Sutherland Rich Memorial Moot Court Competition for law students. The competition is one of the premier national moot court competitions for law students interested in intellectual property law. The competition annually receives over 60 applications from two-student teams from across the country that are narrowed down to 10 teams (2 from each region) to compete in the national championship at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. Finalists of the National Competition receive cash prizes and the honor of arguing before Federal Circuit judges.

The Southeastern Regional Competition will take place on March 23-24, 2018 at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. Teams from across the southeast, including Georgia State University School of Law, University of Virginia School of Law, and others, will be competing. A copy of the problem statement and details about the competition can be found at http://www.aipla.org/resources2/programs/Pages/Moot-Court-Competition.aspx. This year’s problem statement involves an appeal from a decision by the District Court for the District of Oceana. The issues on appeal are the obviousness of the University of Neptune’s School of Medicine’s patent directed to a method for translating human thoughts into text, a related breach of contract claim, and whether the federal court has subject matter jurisdiction under 28 U.S.C. §1338 when the patent issue is not the primary issue in the case.

Those interested in contributing can grade briefs between Feb. 10, 2018, and March 9, 2018, (a bench brief and grading key will be provided) and/or judge oral arguments on March 23-24, 2018, at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. If you are interested in helping—or if you have any questions about the competition—please contact the regional co-chairs Elizabeth Lester at 404.885.8625 or elizabeth.lester@equifax.comKarissa Blyth at 404.853.8012 or karissablyth@eversheds-sutherland.com, and Pharan Evans at 404-885-2631 orpharan.evans@troutman.com. Your help and support are greatly appreciated.

This will be the fourth time Atlanta hosts the recently formed Southeastern Regional Competition, which is only possible with the support of the Atlanta intellectual property law community. That support included the State Bar of Georgia, the Atlanta Bar Association, the Atlanta IP Inn of Court, the Georgia State University Intellectual Property Advisory Board, leaders from a number of law firms and corporations, about a dozen regional law schools, and many others. We thank our many volunteers last year for your support in making this a premier competition and look forward to working with you again this year.
